57-year-old Brian Helfert is facing 16 counts related to the sexual assault of a minor. The charges stem from an alleged six-year history of sexual assault and abuse of a student victim that Helfert was to be mentoring. Helfert’s trial was set to begin this month; However, due to a serious outbreak of COVID in the courthouse, jail, and the community the trial is postponed until a pre-trial conference on December 6th at which time a new trial will be set. In the meantime, Helfert is out on a PR bond. He is to have no contact with the victim or minors. Menominee County Prosecuting Attorney Jeffrey Rogg says, “ he encourages other persons who may have been victimized by Mr. Helfert to call him directly at 906-863-2002.”
