22-year-old Lawrence Arthur Meeks of Menominee was arraigned before the Honorable Robert J. Jamo in the 95-A District Court on Tuesday, July 11th, following his weekend arrest in the City of Menominee. Menominee County Prosecuting Attorney Jeffrey T. Rogg charged Meeks in a multiple count: Felony Complaint with Armed Robbery and Assaulting/Resisting/Obstructing a Police Officer. According to court documents and information presented in court, on Sunday, July 9th, at 3:30pm, a Dollar General employee reported to Menominee Police Department Officers (MPD) that a store patron, later identified as Meeks, had stolen merchandise, including frozen meat, from the store in Menominee. When the employee confronted Meeks about the theft, Meeks brushed past him and exited the store. Meeks confronted the employee in the parking lot and stated, “I have a knife and I will cut you, you bastard!” MPD Officers quickly located Meeks with the help of an employee at the nearby Shell gas station. When MPD Officers attempted to arrest and handcuffed Meeks, he fought with them to the point where a straight arm-bar takedown maneuver had to be administered in order to subdue him. Prosecuting Attorney Rogg says, “Violent crimes, especially those with weapons, will not be tolerated by me or my partners in law enforcement. The defendant’s immediate arrest should serve as a warning to anyone willing to engage in armed robberies — ‘you will face the consequences.”
A Probable Cause Conference is scheduled on July 25th; and a Preliminary Examination on August 3rd. Bond was established by Judge Jamo in the amount of $5,000, cash/surety. The principal offense carries a possible prison sentence of up life, or any term of years.
