04/12/2019- Just six years after their opening, the Abundant Life Mission in Menominee now serves more than 200 people annually. The road to get there wasn’t easy, as there was some contention from the City over whether the homeless shelter should even be located at the former Menominee Catholic Central building. But, Abundant Life Pastor Dave Pennell says they’ve established themselves as a valuable part of the community and they’re looking to further their impact with some big plans for the future that could involve acquiring the vacant hospital building on Shore Drive in Marinette. Pennell’s visions for that building include opening a second homeless shelter for people with residency restrictions that prevent them from crossing state lines, creating a veterans’ home and larger VA medical center, providing affordable daycare services, and opening a community health clinic providing free or reduced medical, dental, and vision services.
However, Pennell says he’s not letting those initiatives detract from the work they’re doing at the existing shelter. The services they provide led to an 89% success rate in clients in 2018- their highest year on record.
Abundant Life is the only full-time shelter accepting men, women, and children in all of Northern Wisconsin, the UP, and Northern Lower Michigan. The average stay for clients last year was just under one month.
