03/11/2019- As the ice fishing season winds down, anglers on UP waters should start preparing for the mandatory shanty removal date. The Michigan DNR requires shanties in all UP counties to be removed by March 31st. The deadline is even earlier for those on Michigan-Wisconsin boundary waters where ice shacks will need to be taken down by this Friday, March 15th. Following the mandatory removal dates, shanties may still be used on the ice as long as it safe, but must be removed daily. Anglers whose structures fall through the ice are subject to penalties of up to 30 days in jail, fines, or both and they can also be hit with the cost to reimburse the agency that retrieves it. Conservation officers are urging people to use extreme caution on the ice as temperatures begin to rise, as the repetitive thawing and refreezing of ice weakens its integrity.
