ATVs and UTVs can be useful tools in getting hunters in and out of the woods, but the Wisconsin DNR is reminding people to ride safely during their hunt this year. Hunters often use ATVs or UTVs to retrieve harvests or travel off-road to their hunting location and these riders should remember to wear helmets and buckle up. Most hunting incidents involving ATVs or UTVs often occur on private lands and are linked by common factors. DNR reps say most accidents happen by simply going too fast for conditions, not judging the curve correctly or not knowing the terrain. Hunters are also reminded to complete an ATV safety course, unload weapons before transporting them in an ATV or UTV, and never to drink and ride. Since January, 33 people have died in ATV and UTV-related crashes in 2020, including two in Oconto County. There were 22 fatal ATV/ UTV crashes in Wisconsin in 2019.
