Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin is asking for details on President Trump’s recent announcement that Mexico has agreed to immediately begin buying large quantities of American agricultural products as part of an agreement on Immigration negotiated last week. In a letter to the president, Baldwin says the Mexican Foreign Minister denied the existence of an agricultural element to the agreement, and U.S. trade staff told the House Agricultural Committee they had no details on the agreement.  Baldwin says she doesn’t understand the secrecy if indeed was an agreement reached…

Baldwin says if the agreement guarantees Mexican purchases, that information ought to be available publicly so that Wisconsin farmers can factor that into their production decisions.  She says retaliatory tariffs imposed by the Trump administration have hit dairy farmers particularly hard, with over 1500 daily farms going out of business since President Trump took office.
