Those visiting Wisconsin’s state-owned parks, forests, and other public land this Independence Day are reminded to hold off on the fireworks. Because they pose a serious fire risk, the Wisconsin DNR says fireworks are prohibited on all DNR land and the use of smaller novelty items like sparklers and fountains is strongly discouraged. The fine for firework use on state land could cost up to $200. Officials also say anyone setting off fireworks on private land should only ignite them on level ground free of debris and away from homes and other structures and keep a water source nearby. While wildfires caused by fireworks only account for five-percent of the annual total, these fires typically occur in a condensed timeframe around the Fourth of July.
