01/25/2019- An arctic blast is hitting the area. The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Chill Advisory for much of the region, including Marinette and Menominee Counties, through this afternoon, with wind chills as low as -35 possible. Even after that passes, the temps aren’t expected to climb much above zero through the weekend and into next week. Marinette County Public Health says dangerous conditions like hypothermia and frostbite can occur in a matter of minutes in this type of weather and it’s important for residents to take the necessary steps to protect themselves and their families. People should stay inside when possible and if you do have to go outside, dress in several loose-fitting layers and keep your hands, mouth, and face covered. Also, pack an emergency kit in your car with items like blankets, snacks, a shovel, and jumper cables. Residents should check in on family, friends, and neighbors, especially those who live alone, and be sure they have an adequate heat source and supplies. Last winter, nearly 40 people in Wisconsin died from exposure to extreme cold.
