Hundreds of fishermen will take to the waters off Marinette and Menominee this weekend for the M-and-M Great Lakes Sports Fishermen’s annual Brown Trout Derby. Beyond the fishing, the derby, now in its 38th year, also features raffles and food provided by the American Legion Post 146. Tom Lawson is the chairman of the event. He says the derby draws in as many as 1200 people and all the proceeds are used to support other M&M GLSF events including their Heads-Up Derby and Kids Fishing Derby.
While cash prizes are awarded in four categories- brown trout, Chinook salmon, rainbow trout, and walleye- Lawson says they’ve made some changes to how the payouts are distributed.
The Brown Trout Derby runs Saturday through Sunday and is held at the Menominee Memorial Marina. The cities and counties of Marinette and Menominee have agreed to waive all boat launch fees this weekend for the event.
