05/08/2019- You don’t have to go far to get your hands on any one of several new CBD products coming onto the market, but you do have to go outside the City of Marinette. Back in 2017 the City enacted a ban on the sale of all cannabis products, including CBD oil and other forms of the compound. Some have expressed concerns that move was too restrictive, but Lieutenant Scott Ries with the Marinette Police Department spoke to the City Council Tuesday saying the claims of these products in treating anything from insomnia to cancer are difficult to prove and without FDA oversight, knowing exactly what’s in them, including THC, is even harder. That’s why the local ordinance goes as far as it does.
There are thousands of CBD vendors nationwide and even convenience stores and coffee shops offer these products to consumers. Lt. Ries says they have been found in some retailers in Marinette, but for now, the police department is focusing on educating people about the City ordinance, not writing citations.
The topic was presented for discussion only Tuesday. At this point, Marinette hasn’t indicated they have any intention of scaling back their cannabis ordinance.
