12/31/2019- The former JV volleyball coach for Coleman High School will serve more than nine years in prison for carrying on a sexual relationship with one of his former players in 2018. 42-year-old Jason Nieminski was sentenced to a total of 9 years 9 months in prison followed by ten years of extended supervision for convictions on counts of sexual intercourse with a child over 16, exposing a child to harmful descriptions, and causing a child to view sexual activity. It’s the maximum sentence allowable and Marinette County District Attorney DeShea Morrow says it’s appropriate considering Nieminski took advantage of a student who originally came to him to confide prior trauma she’d experienced.
Nieminski’s attorney Brian Maloney argued Nieminski does not pose a threat to the public and that lengthy incarceration is unwarranted. He instead suggested a brief stint in Marinette County Jail or prison be followed by considerable extended supervision so that Nieminski could maintain a relationship with his young son. However, Judge David Miron says his concern lies with the impact the offense had on the victim and her family, not with Nieminski and his.
Nieminski resigned from his coaching position with the Coleman School District in February of last year. He will receive credit for seven days already served and will also have to comply with all the requirements of the Wisconsin Sex Offender Registry.
