09/06/2018- There are upgrades comes to some Marinette recreational sites, but the costs are higher than anticipated. Tuesday, City Council approved replacing the Civic Center roof at a cost of around 82000 and installing a new drainage system at the larger of the baseball diamonds at Higley Park for about 21-thousand-dollars. $38000 had originally been budgeted for the baseball field work in 2016 and 45-thousand was budgeted for the roof project. So, with only $83000 in their capital improvement fund, the city came up about $20000 short- meaning money would have to be drawn from the contingency fund for one of the projects.
There was some tension surrounding the discussion of the baseball field work when the council had to choose between two bids: one to improve the drainage at just one field and the other to upgrade both for around $47000. They ultimately decided to only accept the bid for work in the larger field and agreed to assess the need and funding for work at the second field in the future. However, Councilman Brian Walters felt that decision was partly hinged on the need to replace the Civic Center roof, despite the fact that the field work was approved two years ago and never completed.
It was decided the Civic Center roof replacement cost will come from the City’s capital outlay fund, while the new baseball field drainage system will be covered by the contingency fund. Once the field project is complete, the city will have about $16000 remaining in their contingency fund for 2018.
