10/17/2018- Some Marinette residents are concerned a city ordinance could impede on their right to own service or support animals. The Public Safety and Code Enforcement Committee considered a request Monday to make an exception to the three-animal limit for a single dwelling if some of those pets are registered service or support animals. Resident Nadine Beland says she was cited for keeping five dogs in her home, despite the fact that some are her own support animals and others were left in her care when her mother passed away. Beland says the animals are a critical part of her prescribed treatment plan
Committee Member Jason Flatt feels the existing ordinance isn’t clear on just how many animals a resident can keep in general, regardless of their therapy status.
The Committee agreed to ask the City Attorney to examine how other municipalities have handled similar issues involving support animals and bring his recommendations back to them in the coming months.
