04/12/2019- Boaters on the Peshtigo River won’t be seeing a slow-no wake ordinance enacted just yet. The Marinette County Development Committee revisited a proposal Tuesday to create the no-wake zone along about 8 miles of the river beginning at the City of Peshtigo to resolve some shoreline damage issues caused in part by boaters travelling too quickly. However, County Conservationist Greg Cleereman says he’s concerned about the repercussions this kind of ordinance could have and how it would be enforced or by whom.
County Administrator John Lefebvre maintains he’d prefer to see more boater education about the issue rather than venture into creating a no-wake ordinance.
Because the portion of the Peshtigo River in question falls mainly within the Town of Peshtigo, committee members felt it would be more appropriate to consider establishing a slow-no wake zone there only if the request came directly from the municipality. Ultimately, the committee took no action on the topic.
