01/08/2020- The man accused of murdering an engaged couple in a Marinette County park more than four decades ago will undergo a competency exam. 82-year-old Raymand Vannieuwenhoven’s attorney Travis Crowell requested the exam for his client at a status conference held Tuesday. Vannieuwenhoven allegedly shot and killed Ellen Matheys and David Schuldes at McClintock Park in 1976, but wasn’t arrested until last year when new technological advancements matched his DNA with evidence recovered from the original crime scene. He’s facing two counts of 1st degree murder, and if convicted, will serve life in prison. A competency hearing for Vannieuwenhoven has now been set for February 21st.
