07/10/2019- The Menominee County Board has approved $20,000 to contract with an attorney to help reduce a 500 case backlog in the County Prosecutor’s office. Prosecutor Jeffrey Rogg says Carl Downing, who is retired from the Dickinson County Prosecutor’s office has agreed to help out in Menominee County. Downing has also been doing part time work in Dickinson and Delta Counties. Downing will work at a rate of $75 per hour, which works out to 267 hours under the $20,000 allocation, enough to last through the current budget year which ends October 1st.
Rogg says he expects not all the old cases will be able to be prosecuted
Rogg says Downing already has taken some cases to work on. He also has agreed to do some limited courtroom work in Mental Commitment and Child Abuse and Neglect cases.
Rogg has been working alone in the office since moving up from assistant prosecutor when former Prosecutor William Merkle retired in April. Rogg is still working to find a Chief Assistant. A newly created second assistant position will be filled by a law school graduate in August.
