06/18/2019- Menominee Water and Sewer customers will see an increase starting on their July bills. Monday night the City Council approved a new schedule of fees that will result in a $3.89 per quarter increase for the average residential customer. The increase is to cover growing costs of operating the utilities. It does not include any additional money for replacing water and sewer lines as a part of planned road projects in upcoming years.
The Menominee City Council has set a public hearing on June 26th to get input on a proposed ordinance which would prohibit all types of recreational pot establishments in the city. Although the recreational use of marijuana is now legal in Michigan, the state is allowing municipalities to opt out on allowing businesses to sell the drug.
City Manager Tony Graff told the council the city has begun grading and reshaping alleys in the city. Crews started from the south end of the city and should complete the work by the end of the July, if the weather cooperates.
The council approved the purchase of two new Police Department Tahoes, and seven new police radios. A grant will cover 35% of the cost of one vehicle and the radios. The second will replace a vehicle which was totaled out after being swamped by water on harbor drive during a spring storm.
