Some Marinette County officials are considering eliminating the coroner position within the county. At a Law Enforcement Committee meeting Monday, board members discussed instead implementing a medical examiner role or contracting with another county for medical examiner services. Sheriff Jerry Sauve says although the county has been well-served by coroners in the past, it may become increasingly difficult to fill that role moving forward.
While the coroner is an elected position, a medical examiner would be hired by the county. County Administrator John Lefebvre says several other counties in the state are choosing to contract their medical examiner services out. If Marinette County would adopt a contract similar to that which Oconto County has with Brown County, it could come at a greater expense.
The committee took no action on the topic. Lefebvre says he will bring a presentation to the full county board at their meeting later this month.
