02/06/2019- More than 200 inmates at the Marinette County Jail have received their GED while serving out their sentences. Inmate Education and Programs Sergeant Joe Moser says the jail met that milestone in early January through their collaboration with Northeast Wisconsin Technical College. The jail and NWTC have been offering inmates the opportunity to prepare for and take their GED since 2005 and the jail became a certified GED testing site in 2009. Moser reports Marinette County inmates testing for their GED have about an 86% success rate and, following completion, inmates are referred to the Wisconsin Job Center to work with personnel there to establish post-incarceration employment. Moser says the inmate GED program has been effective at reducing the county’s recidivism rate and opens the door for inmates to explore options in higher education.
