04/13/2020- Unfortunately, the coronavirus pandemic is being used by scammers as an opportunity to make a quick buck and local residents are already being targeted. The Marinette County Sheriff’s Office says a “COVID Grandparent Scam” attempt was reported to the Aging and Disability Resource Center by a Peshtigo resident. The scammer apparently called posing as panicked grandchild who said they just tested positive for COVID-19 and asked the victim to send them money. Officials say in the wake of coronavirus concerns, scammers can be particularly compelling, but they’re reminding people to always verify a caller’s identity and again urge everyone not to provide any sort of payment or personal information over the phone.
