Marinette County Emergency Management and other officials nationwide are urging residents to be alert to potential scams that present as COVID-19 relief. As Congress debates further COVID-19 relief initiatives, including the potential for another stimulus check, the IRS and a coalition of state tax agencies and tax industry officials are warning individuals not to respond to a text message about a $1200 stimulus check. The link that often accompanies the message is a fake phishing URL that directs people to an imitation IRS site and then asks for their personal and financial details, including bank account information. Individuals who do receive a text like this are encouraged to send a screenshot including the date and time of the message, the phone number from which it came, and the phone number that received the text to the agency at phishing@irs.gov.
