The local shipyard gets a big funding boost from the state in its effort to complete infrastructure improvements and secure a new $10-billion federal contract. Governor Tony Evers visited Fincantieri Marinette Marine Thursday to announce Wisconsin will commit $31-million for upgrades to the shipyard to accommodate the construction of larger vessels, including the four multi-mission surface combatants already awarded and the US Navy’s new Guided Missile Frigate. Evers says FMM’s success is essential to the community and the local economy.
FMM President and CEO Jan Allman says the company is one of five that has been selected by the Navy to compete f0or the newest class of small surface combatants. The 20-ship contract will be awarded in 2020 and Allman says FMM’s partnership with Wisconsin gives them the edge they need.
It has not yet been determined just how the $31-million will be spent. Governor Evers says the money will be included in the state’s next budget.
