If you’ve travelled through Marinette you’ve likely seen it happen and you’ve maybe even done it yourself, but now, the city’s Civic Affairs, Cemetery, Traffic, and Lights Committee is looking into ways to prevent motorists from running red lights at the Hall Avenue/ Jefferson Street intersection. Captain John Corry with the Marinette Police Department told the committee Monday the area is a hot spot for accidents and traffic infractions, due largely to driver confusion about the synchronization of the lights at Jefferson Street and Madison Avenue.
Captain Corry suggested making Jefferson Street a one-way route to help limit the potential for crashes. It was also suggested that the lights be re-timed to allow drivers extra time to stop before reaching the Madison Avenue intersection. However, City Engineer Brian Miller says before the committee gets too far into the change-making process, he needs to consult with the Wisconsin DOT
The committee asked Miller to contact the DOT about possible options and requirements and report back in the coming months.
