The fate of Marinette’s Forest Home Chapel remains undecided. The item resurfaced on the agenda of the city’s Historic Preservation Commission this week and Chairperson Dan Kallgren says while the decision is an important one, it’s become a circular conversation between the HPC and Marinette’s Civic Affairs Committee, with no one knowing quite what to do with the building. City Council and Civic Affairs Committee Member Peter Noppenburg says the building has fallen into disrepair and some type of action will need to be taken soon.
How much the chapel’s repairs and renovations are going to cost and where that funding will come from has also come into question. Because of this Noppenburg, says transforming it into a columbarium whose space can then be purchase by residents might be the best option.
The building is currently being used to house cemetery maintenance equipment. The HPC plans to meet with Forest Home Cemetery Caretakers in May to discuss the feasibility of creating a columbarium in the chapel before presenting a formal proposal to the City.
