03/09/2020- The United States Coast Guard will begin ice-breaking operations known as “Spring Break Out” this week. Coast Guard Cutters Mackinaw, Mobile Bay and Neah Bay will be breaking ice on the bay of Green Bay in preparation for the Port of Green Bay resuming commercial shipping activity at the end of the week. These ice-breaking operations will likely occur in areas also used by recreational users including the Green Bay Entrance Channel, the Menominee River Entrance, and the waters of Green Bay from Escanaba to the Port of Green Bay. In the days and weeks to come, these ice-breaking efforts are expected to increase in frequency as ice conditions deteriorate and commercial navigation increases. Recreational ice users should remain alert to this type of activity in the listed navigation areas. Additionally, as the temperatures warm, the Coast Guard is urging people to recognize the instability of the ice, plan their activities carefully, and use caution near the ice.
