The Keel Laying Ceremony was held Thursday at Marinette Marine for the future USS Minneapolis-St. Paul. LCS21 is the 11th Freedom Class Littoral Combat ship to be built at the local shipyard. Five ships have been delivered to the Navy while 8 others are in various stages of construction.
The ship’s sponsor is Minnesota Native Jodi Greene, the Deputy Under Secretary of the Navy for Policy. Her initials were welded into a steel plate that will be placed in the hull of the ship. George Seymour had the honor of being the ceremonial welder
Greene said the workers at Marinette Marine are contributing to the country’s defense mission.
LCS 21 will be the second vessel named for the Twin Cities of Minneapolis St. Paul. The first was a submarine that was decommissioned in 2008.
The Freedom Variant LCS Team consists of Fincanteri Marinette Marine, Lockheed Martin, and Naval Architect Gibbs and Cox, supported by more than 800 suppliers in 42 states.
