09/10/2018- Safe Kids Marinette County continues their work to ensure more children are safe on area waters. The organization is looking to install a Kids Don’t Float life jacket station at Lake Noquebay Park. Molly Bonjean, Health Officer for Marinette County Public Health, spoke to the county’s Infrastructure Committee Wednesday. She says Safe Kids partnered with local Boy Scouts to construct the station, which allows visitors to borrow life jackets on an as-needed basis.
Although the theft of these life jackets is uncommon, the station will be monitored and maintained by local law enforcement and other groups who use the lake regularly. Lieutenant Jason Ducaine says in Wisconsin, the leading cause of boating-related deaths are drownings and he is hopeful this program will prevent that from happening locally.
The Infrastructure Committee unanimously approved the plan. Once installed, the life jacket loaner station at Lake Noquebay Park will be the fifth of its kind in Marinette County.
