Marinette County Sheriff Jerry Sauve says an elderly Green Bay man died when his truck went through the ice on Lake Noquebay in the Town of Little Inlet. At 8:55pm Friday night Marinette County Dispatch received a call from a fisherman who spotted open water and a cooler floating on the North side of the Lake off of Maple Beach Road. Using the Town of Stephenson Fire Department’s air boat and an underwater camera, deputies saw a red truck and the body of a man partially out of the vehicle on the bottom in about 12 feet of water. The Sheriff’s Department Dive team was able to recover the body. The man was believed to be alone in the vehicle when it went down. The victim was identified as 79 year old Herbert C. Lax Jr. of Green Bay.
The Sheriff’s Department is warning that the area where Middle Inlet Creek flows into the Lake near Maple Beach Road is dangerous. Ice conditions are deteriorating and the danger is deceiving as in areas such as this, the ice wears thin from the bottom.
