10/16/2018- Some Menominee Council members have remaining questions about the Michigan DEQ’s issuance of a wetlands permit for Aquila Resource’s Back 40 Mine, but the answers have thus far been hard to come by. DEQ staff involved in the wetlands permitting process had been invited to attend a City Council meeting to speak about the conditional permit granted in June. However, in an email presented by Administrative Secretary Susan Johnson Monday, Kim Fish with MDEQ said those personnel are unable to attend a meeting this fall. She further went on to say the department would take additional questions from the council but questioned whether the request was really for the council or simply to provide another venue for the public to express their concerns.
Council Member Frank Pohlmann, who previously pushed to pass a resolution formally requesting MDEQ Wetlands Resource Division staff attend a council meeting, says the response is disappointing.
The council will consider submitting questions to MDEQ about the wetlands permit. The City’s Judicial and Legislative Personnel and Labor Committee will likely discuss the format for that process at their next meeting.
