The Marinette County Board is being asked to consider changing from a coroner to a medical examiner.  County Administrator John LaFebre made the recommendation to the board at Tuesday’s meeting.  LaFebre says the duties of the two positions are identical.

LeFebre says he and the Sheriff had a meeting with long-time Coroner George Smith who recommended if the county went through with the change, the position should be kept in-house to maintain the level of service.

LeFebre says he would welcome an application from the current coroner for the medical examiner position should the change be made.

LeFebre says the board needs to make the decision before April 15th, the date when persons can begin filing for the office of coroner for the next term.  The change, if made would be effective the first of the year.  LeFebre hopes a recommendation out of the Law Enforcement and Personnel Committees will be ready for the board at their March meeting.
