07/12/2018–The City of Menominee’s Planning Commission and the city’s Finance Committee seem to be on different pages as to a required update of the city’s Master Use plan. Originally CUPAAD, which did the last plan update, had made a presentation to the city and with input for some additions to the scope of work, was asking about $15,000 to do the project. In April the Planning Commission asked the city to seek other proposals. Three firms replied, and after a joint meeting of the Council, Planning Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals last month, the proposal from Smith Group of Ann Arbor was scored the highest. That proposal, costing about $30,000 was recommended by the Planning Commission on Tuesday. Later that evening, when the Finance Committee met, Alderman Bill Plemel questioned the spending of the extra money.
Finance Committee Chairman Frank Pohlman agreed with Plemel. Mayor Jean Stegeman said she understood where the Planning Commission was coming from. Stegeman suggested there could be a scenario where the Smith Group could advise CUPPAD on the project. The Finance Committee asked City Manager Tony Graff to contact CUPAAD and did not take action on a recommendation to the City Council at Tuesday’s meeting.
