The Dog’s Belly and 60 Islands in Holmes and Lake Township in Menominee County are hoping to be considered for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. Tuesday evening, the Coalition to SAVE the Menominee River was seeking the support from the Menominee County Board of Commissioners to make this a reality. However, the board started the meeting out by moving the resolution from action to a discussion. Chairman of the Board, Larry Phelps says, “had they received the information earlier, the board could have had a discussion at an earlier meeting and then at this evening’s meeting the board could have taken action.”
Phelps says, “I think the ball was dropped somewhere along the line. They sent the information to us too late.”
The deadline for the listing in the National Register is Friday, January 28th. If you have questions regarding The Dog’s Belly and 60 Islands, you can contact Dale Burie at 615-512-3506.
