02/12/2020- Menominee County is the latest to join the growing list of those across Michigan considering becoming Second Amendment sanctuary counties. The County’s Board of Commissioners reviewed a resolution Tuesday formally opposing the enactment of legislation at the state or federal level that might infringe upon a citizen’s right to bear arms and supporting the Sheriff’s Department and Prosecuting Attorney in the exercise of their judgement not to enforce any such law. There was strong backing on both sides of the issue from members of the board, including from Steve Gromala who’s concerned passing this type of a resolution may be overstepping their bounds and setting a dangerous precedent for the future.
But Commissioner Jan Hafeman says this is about more than just gun rights, it’s about protecting all the freedoms guaranteed under the constitution and she wants to see the county take a stand.
Nearby Delta County recently took up the Sanctuary County title and the resolution considered by Menominee County was similar to ones adopted in Mackinac and Cheboygan Counties. The item was listed for discussion only Tuesday and will likely go to a vote at the Board’s next meeting February 25th.
