02/19/2020- Just a few months after the City of Menominee voted to opt out of recreational marijuana sales, they’re considering reversing course. Tuesday the City Council heard a recommendation from the Judicial and Legislative/ Personnel and Labor Committee authorizing the City Manager and City Attorney to begin gathering information on what an ordinance permitting recreational and/or medical sales might look like. Council member Bill Plemel says these are only initial, but still important steps, in determining what the future of pot in Menominee will be.
However, Council member Frank Pohlmann was not on board with the idea, saying revisiting the conversation following the City’s crack-down on illegally-operating marijuana social lounges sends the wrong message to the public and, he adds, Council and City staff have other issues to focus on.
A motion to move forward with developing the framework for an ordinance on marijuana sales and how they might be regulated was carried on a 6-2 vote, though Council did note the goals and objectives previously set by the Council for the City Manager should remain the top priority.
