08/07/2019- Several Marinette firefighters received special recognition for a pair of rescue efforts this spring. Monday night, Mayor Steve Genisot and Fire Chief Jay Heckel presented the Marinette Fire Department’s Crew One with a service award for their role in the search and rescue operation after a boat capsized on the Menominee River April 29th. Because of their quick response, crews were able to save one of the two fishermen in the boat, despite cold and dangerous water conditions. Heckel says although the fire department was the first on scene, it wasn’t long before multiple agencies from both sides of the river arrived to assist.
Two firefighters from the department’s same crew were also awarded commendations for life-saving efforts on the bay of Green Bay when a fisherman and his dog fell through the ice near the Red Arrow Park boat launch April 5th.
