Michigan Senator Gary Peters was in Marinette Friday for a shipyard tour at Fincantieri Marinette Marine. He joined local high school welding program students getting an inside look at the process of turning sheets of steel into some of the world’s most advanced warships. Senator Peters says there needs to be a continued focus on attracting and retaining a skilled workforce.
Marinette Marine has recently sought funding from local, state, and federal governments to expand the shipyard’s capabilities and secure new contracts. While he didn’t allude to how the state might aid in that effort, Senator Peters says it is something Michigan should be involved in.
Around 2500 people enter the shipyard daily and one-third of Marinette Marine’s workforce lives in Michigan.
