05/31/2019- The Iron Mountain-based VA is rolling out their new Community Care program next week and it may allow some vets to receive the care they need closer to home. Representatives with the Oscar G Johnson VA Medical Center say the program is part of the MISSION Act of 2018, which aims to strengthen the nationwide VA Healthcare System by giving veterans more options in their healthcare decisions. The Community Care program will be launched June 6th and under their access standards, veterans can opt to see a community provider if they’ve been waiting for more than 20 days for primary, mental health and non-institutional extended care services, or if they face a 30-minute drive to the nearest VA facility. Eligibility for community care does not require a Veteran to receive that care in the community and they can still choose to have VA provide their care. The Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center serves approximately 20 thousand Veterans throughout the Upper Peninsula and northern Wisconsin every year.
