03/05/2020- As the waters of the local PFAS contamination issue get even murkier, the City of Marinette is taking steps to ensure each related decision they make is the right one now and into the future. Common Council reviewed a reimbursement agreement with Tyco this week that would have the company footing the bill for costs the city incurs enlisting the help of an environmental attorney and environmental consultant to investigate and advise the City on the potential extension of municipal water to the Town of Peshtigo. The initial agreement has a $50000 cap, but Tyco will consider increasing that limit once the City reaches 80% of it. However, Alderperson Rick Polzin wondered if exploring that water extension was putting the cart before the horse.
Mayor Steve Genisot says the investigation doesn’t commit the City to anything, but they need to determine if extending their water main is even a feasible option that can be brought to the table in delivering clean drinking water to Town of Peshtigo residents.
The contract will undergo some further revisions and is expected to be brought back to the Council for discussion and a possible vote in the coming months.
