08/20/2020- Republican lawmakers from the U.P. are speaking out after no one from the region was included on Michigan’s new Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission. State Representatives Beau LaFave and Greg Markkanen, along with Senator Ed McBroom said in a joint statement that the move unfairly takes away representation and accountability from residents in the U.P. The closest representative on that new panel resides more than 100 miles south of the Mackinac Bridge and LaFave, Markkanen, and McBroom say while the U.P. may only have a small portion of the state’s population, it makes up about 30 percent of the state’s land, warranting the need for citizens there to have a voice in the drawing of election districts. Thousands of Michiganders from nearly every county applied for the new commission, which was approved by voters in 2018 and is designed to do away with partisan gerrymandering.
