Niagara could be eyeing a new use for some grant funds from the Wisconsin Department of Administration. The community was awarded around $45000 through the DOA’s Community Development Block Grant program which was initially intended to help fund new street lighting and sidewalk upgrades in the community. Marinette County Administrator John Lefebvre says that streetlight project is now not possible because Niagara doesn’t own those structures and cannot obtain ownership of them from WE Energies. Instead, they’re now considering using the money for a road improvement project for Tyler Road in Niagara which leads to a popular recreational area in the community.
Lefebvre says the new project will run the City of Niagara slightly more than the lighting upgrades would have, due mostly to engineering costs. The County is working to amend the CDBG grant application to seek the road work funding and will submit that to the state for consideration.
