08/06/2020- The closure of the Verso paper mill in Wisconsin Rapids will have an impact on local revenues, though just how severe has yet to be seen. The mill ended operations last month, putting about 900 people out of a job. Marinette County Forestry Administrator Pete Villas says this rather sudden and unanticipated closure has led to an oversaturation of the timber market and necessitated a conversation about adjusting Marinette County’s base rates to allow for a sort of market “reset.”
Villas says the Verso closure will also force the County to reconsider how it approaches timber sale extension requests for the coming year. The Wisconsin Rapids plant was one of the largest raw wood buyers in the state. Multiple agencies at the federal, state, and local levels are working to explore options to reopen the facility, but no official plans have been announced.
