05/05/2020- The latest Michigan Kids Count survey shows fewer children in Menominee County are living in poverty than they were ten years ago. The 2020 report has just over 17%of kids age 0 through 17 living in poverty in the county as compared to 22%in 2010. The local figure is now below the statewide average of 19%. However, the total number of households in poverty or asset-limited or income-constrained in Menominee County has increased from 33% in 2010 to 41-percent today. The education figures were not as favorable for Menominee County kids. While more local students are graduating on time than in 2010, the number of 3rd graders proficient in English and Language Arts dropped from 55% to 51% and 8th graders showing proficiency in math fell from about 36% to just 23%.
