The Marinette County jail population is down. The facility was nearly at-capacity with between 140 and 150 inmates at the start of 2017. However, those numbers dropped by more than two-dozen in May and have remained relatively steady since. Sheriff Jerry Sauve says much of the decline can be attributed to the efforts of the Criminal Justice Coordinating Committee to rehabilitate offenders.
Sauve added there had been some consideration of adding a jail expansion to the county’s capital improvement plan for 2019, but he no longer believes that issue is a priority.
