05/28/2019- The local state representative has introduced a bill aimed at limiting the use of firefighting foam containing the dangerous chemicals known as PFAS. Under this bill by Representative John Nygren, the use of Class B firefighting foams containing intentionally-added PFAS would be prohibited, except for first responders using the foam in emergency firefighting or fire prevention operations or for testing purposes if appropriate containment, treatment, and disposal methods are in place. The bill provides DNR with rule-making authority to set those parameters. This is the second piece of PFAS contamination response legislation Nygren has authored this session. As co-chair of the Joint Committee on Finance, he plans to advocate for the inclusion of additional resources to study PFAS contaminants in the state budget.
