Marinette is looking to expand camping opportunities at its City Park. Several years ago, the City cleared additional space at the park’s campground with the intention of creating new rustic sites there without water or electric hook-ups. That project eventually stalled out, and Monday Public Works Superintendent Pat Carlson and Executive Director of Recreation and Events Gavin Scray brought a proposal to Marinette’s Parks and Rec Committee to complete the work. They estimate the cost to add a picnic table, signpost, fire ring, and gravel to the 6 to 8 new sites would be between $6000 and $7000. The project would allow the City to once again welcome in tent campers, which were prohibited from the campground last season. Currently, City Park campsites rent for $20 nightly, though a reduced rate may be considered for these rustic sites. City Park is typically a popular place for individuals who come to town for sporting and other events during the camping season, but the site took a major hit when it remained closed for a good portion of this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Parks and Rec Committee is expected to revisit the rustic campsite topic at their next meeting.
