01/02/2020- January is National Radon Awareness Month and Public Health Delta and Menominee Counties wants to help keep your family safe. The agency is offering free radon test kits to Menominee County residents throughout the month to test for the radioactive gas. Radon is a tasteless, odorless, colorless gas that is naturally occurring in soil and rock. It can sometimes seep into a home and, at high levels, can cause serious health issues including lung cancer. Test kits can be picked up at the Menominee County Public Health Office and are hung in the lowest livable level of a home for three to seven days. After that time, the kit is sealed and mailed in for analysis. If unsafe levels of radon are detected, residents can then take proactive steps to mitigate the problem and bring the gas levels to a safer concentration.
