10/06/2020- A couple of common phone scams are making the rounds in Marinette County. According to Sheriff Jerry Sauve, his office has received reports of both the “grandparent scam” and “federal agent scam” recently. The first targets older individuals and the callers claim to be the victim’s grandchild who has found themselves in trouble and requests money be wired to them right away. In the other, the caller impersonates a federal agent from the Department of Justice or IRS and state that money must be sent as soon as possible, or the victim will be arrested. The Sheriff’s Department is reminding people to never send money, give out credit or debit card numbers, or provide social security numbers or other personal information to these callers. In fact, the best course of action, they say, is to simply hang up the phone.
