The naming of a portion of US Highway 41 will honor the sacrifice of a fallen US Airman. The stretch of highway between the City of Menominee and Village of Daggett has been designated as the Samuel R Costello Memorial Highway. The effort was spearheaded by local business owner Mike Costello and his brother, Jeff Lamont, who are Sam Costello’s nephews, though they never knew the man before he was killed in Korean War in 1950, but have spent months sifting through articles and records learning more about him. Mike Costello says he’s hopeful the designating of the highway in his uncle’s community will help preserve the man’s legacy
Mike Costello and Lamont worked with Representative Beau LaFave and Senator Ed McBroom to have the portion of US 41 designated for their uncle. That House Bill 4228 was recently signed into law by Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Corporal Sam Costello enlisted in the US Air Force in 1948 and served as an equipment repairman. He was on a transport aircraft which crashed into Mt. Tabayoc in the Philippines in December of 1950, killing everyone on board.
