07/05/2019- A project to restore and preserve Marinette’s iconic Ike Stephenson statue could get underway yet this summer. The City’s Historic Preservation Commission discussed the work Monday and although the possibility of an outside party funding the restoration fell through, Commission Chairperson Dan Kallgren says city officials he’s spoken with have indicated they still want to see the project completed. The restoration would cost about $3000, but the Commission is waiting on a more detailed breakdown of that quote. The base of the statue was recently repaired, but bronze disease has begun to affect the body. The statue was built in 1922 as a tribute to the politician and lumber baron who lived in Marinette for much of his adult life.
