01/25/2019- Marinette’s Community REC Center welcomed guests for the first time last night. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held in conjunction with a reception for major donors at the new $16-million facility. The project broke ground in May of 2017, but the vision and planning has been in the works for many more years. Tim Stauss, Vice President and Business Banking Officer of Stephenson National Bank and Trust spoke on behalf of the project’s Fundraising Efforts and says none of it would have been possible without the backing of the community and the $6-million of donor funding received.
The REC Center is located on 14 acres of land adjacent to and previously owned by the Marinette School District. Marinette Schools’ Quality Assurance Director Corry Lambie says the property was sold to the City for just one dollar, but the transaction was worth much more.
The public can get their first look at the facility this evening at a public kick-off event from 4:00 until 6:00 PM followed by a free hockey tournament or with a self-guided tour Saturday or Sunday. The Community REC Center officially opens its doors for business on Monday.
